ATHENS, Ohio--The Bellarmine Knights field hockey team fell to the Ohio Bobcats 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Athens, Ohio.
Â
The Bobcats opened the scoring at the 7:50 mark when Katelyn Whittle managed to get a shot past Bellarmine keeper
Breanna McWhorter, earning her fourth goal of the season. Ohio's next and final goal would come at the 12:26 mark when leading goal scorer Jillian Shive logged her seventh goal of the season.
Â
For the game, the Knights were outshot 26-3 in total and managed just one shot on goal compared to 16 for the Bobcats.
Â
"I don't think the scoreboard shows the effort, skill, and determination that his group showed today," said Bellarmine Head Coach
Devanny Boisvert.
Â
McWhorter made an impressive 14 total saves while Ohio goalie Macy Lotze made one save in 30 minutes of playing time before being replaced by backup goalie Nele Graner at the start of the 3rd quarter. McWhorter also made one of her 14 saves on an Ohio penalty stroke during the final few minutes of the 4th quarter of play.
Â
"
Breanna McWhorter was a rock star for us in the cage," Boisvert said. "She made some great saves, kept the defense organized through it all, and made a crucial save during a penalty stroke."
Â
McWhorter's 14 saves brings her season total to 112, which ranks as the fourth-most in a single season in program history.
Â
With the loss to Ohio, Bellarmine falls to 0-12 on the season and 0-8 on the road. Their final game of the 2021 season is a rematch with Ohio in Athens at 1:30 p.m.
Â
"I am really proud of the mindset that we brought to the game today and we continue to bring that energy and fight into tomorrow's game," said Boisvert.
