Bellarmine falls 3-1 on the road at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C.-The Bellarmine field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision on the road to Davidson College at the Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.

After a relatively quiet first half offensively, the host Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into intermission after converting a second quarter penalty corner.

It didn't take long for the offense to show up in the second half as Bellarmine's Marit van der Bend notched her first goal of the season just 37 seconds into the third quarter.  The freshman from the Netherlands got loose on a breakaway and converted the one-on-one situation.

Davidson had a near immediate answer as Abby Dav Pompeo broke the 1-1 tie with her first goal of the season less than a minute after the Bellarmine score.  The Wildcats added to the scoring flurry two minutes later to extend the advantage to 3-1.

That goal, however, would end the scoring as the teams failed to find the back of the cage over the final 26 and a half minutes of regulation.

In addition to the advantage on the scoreboard, Davidson also held nearly every statistical advantage, outshooting the Knights 17-9 and holding a 16-10 edge in penalty corners.

Bellarmine goalie Breanna McWhorter tallied seven saves while logging all 60 minutes in cage.

The Knights return to action on Saturday when they make their Mid-American Conference debut at Longwood University.  Game time is noon in Farmville, Virginia.
