LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team racked up its most goals at the Division-I level, and the Knights needed every one of them early Thursday against Chicago State.
In less than a two-minute span in the second half, Bellarmine scored a pair of goals to create enough distance from the Cougars to eventually pull out a 3-2 win at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Bellarmine (2-0-5) entered D1 last season and posted a two-goal game against Liberty in that initial campaign while also delivering two goals in their previous outing this season against Southern Illinois. The Knights topped those efforts with three scores against Chicago State (0-6-1), their most since piling up six goals against Southwest Baptist in 2019, their final season in D2.
"I know we haven't lost yet, and that is a sign that we are willing to do enough each day," Knights Coach
Chris Tinius said. "The question that remains to be answered is when will we hold ourselves to our top standard all of the time?"
Senior midfielder
Regan Kommor, senior midfielder
Grady Clark and junior forward
Zenia Nava each scored a goal for Bellarmine, which boosted its unbeaten streak to seven. Senior midfielder
Sarah Buse recorded a pair of assists, Kommor and Clark added one helper apiece and junior defender
Sarah Krause tallied an assist.
Bellarmine's goal total easily could have been more — the Knights had a handful of shots clang off the crossbar — but they put three away. The first came in the 15th minute, triggered by an excellent lead pass by Krause up the left side to Buse. The reigning ASUN Player of the Week then crossed to Kommor, who located the net for the second time this season.
Bellarmine maintained the 1-0 lead at the intermission, but Chicago State answered early in the second half, as Hailey Stacey cleaned up the back end of a corner kick to tie the match at 1-all in the 51st minute.
"I thought once we gave up the goal and had some outside stimuli get us focused, we looked very sharp for about 20-25 minutes and that proved to be enough," Tinius said. "When we pressed as a group and used the half spaces effectively, we were really difficult to deal with."
Indeed, Bellarmine responded with the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute. Buse found Kommor up the right side, and Clark drove in Kommor's cross for her first goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Nava added a valuable insurance goal that ultimately turned into the game-winner. She smashed a shot from 30 yards into the top right corner of the net off a pass from Clark for a 3-1 lead on her first goal of the season.
"I know Regan would have liked to finish a bit better, but I thought she and
Sarah Buse were involved in a lot of good stuff," Tinius said. "It was great to see Grady take advantage of an opportunity like we know she can. The first goal started with great distribution from
Sarah Kraus, so there were enough positives to find a win."
Chicago State cut its deficit in half in the 77th minute as Sara Quevedo capitalized on a penalty kick, but the scoring was halted at that point as the Knights locked up their second straight win.
Bellarmine piled up 27 shots, with 13 coming on frame. Chicago State registered 10 shots, with six coming on goal.
Bellarmine will conclude its nonconference slate with a tough assignment as the Knights will play at 7 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Kentucky.
"Stuffing the stat sheet with shots is good," Tinius said, "but as we get ready to turn the corner into conference play, we are going to have to be better with consistency and details. Sunday will be a great test for that."
