Bellarmine falls in five sets to Jacksonville to close ASUN Crossover

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—The Bellarmine Knights volleyball team made a valiant comeback to win the third set and take a 2-1 lead, but the Jacksonville Dolphins made a comeback of their own to pull out a 3-2 victory on Sunday in the ASUN Conference crossover event hosted by Lipscomb University in Allen Arena.

Bellarmine dropped the opening set 25-21 but rebounded with a solid 25-19 victory in set two. The Dolphins were well on their way to a third set victory, holding a 24-20 advantage, but the Knights fought off four set points and eventually pulled out a 27-25 win.

However, Jacksonville seized the momentum about midway through the fourth set and rode that positive energy to 25-18 and 15-9 wins in the fourth and fifth sets to escape with the match victory.

Jacksonville (4-11, 1-2 ASUN) posted 11 service aces and held a 13-8 edge in team blocks.  The Dolphins also ended the match with narrow margins in hitting percentage (.167 to .131) and digs (80 to 79).

Most of Bellarmine's offense came from Bailey Venard, Jayme Scott and Seville Gates, who posted 16, 15, and 13 kills respectively.  Defensively, Anna Lococo came up with a match-high 20 digs.  Gates and Venard were Bellarmine's block leaders with five and three.

Jacksonville's Jenna McNamara and Autumn DeSantis each tallied 15 kills to pace the Dolphin offense while Isa Dostal was a force on the defensive side of the net with eight blocks.

The Knights (4-10, 0-3 AUN) return home for the first time in nearly a month when they host North Alabama on Friday, Oct. 1 in their next action. Bellarmine actually will get three home games in a row as Jacksonville State and Austin Peay visit Knights Hall on Oct. 2 and Oct. 5.
