LOUISVILLE, Ky.—After a tough week of practice that saw several players get injured, the Bellarmine volleyball team sort of limped into its match against George Washington University on Friday night. But, the Knights sprinted off the floor in jubilation at the end of the night after sweeping the Colonials 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 to earn their first victory of the season.
Coach
Jenni Grzebin was forced to ad lib on her lineup as the recent injuries were particularly tough on the Knights' middles. However, the makeshift front line did its job as Bellarmine hit .315 for the match while limiting the Colonials to just .128.
Jayme Scott led the Knights (1-3) in kills and digs, registering 17 and 10 respectively. However, there were solid contributions up and down the Bellarmine lineup.
Junior
Ashley Price impressed the Knights Hall crowd with eight hard kills on just 13 swings while not committing an error and hitting .615. She also added two service aces to her night's work.
Freshman
Seville Gates, meanwhile, totaled seven kills on 16 attacks and added three assisted blocks as she slid into the middle position for much of the action tonight.
Senior
Julia Dailey also made good use of her time on the court with four kills on six attacks for a .667 hitting percentage in just one set of action. Fellow senior
Abbie Stefanon also filled in admirably in the middle spot and finished with six kills while hitting .333.
Setter
Emily Arnold took on the primary setting responsibilities for the entire match due to yet another Bellarmine injury, and the junior transfer from East Tennessee responded with 41 assists on the night.
For George Washington, Melody Williams was the team leader in kills with five while Louisville native Bella Bowman paced the Colonials' defense with a match-high 12 digs.
Both teams return to action tomorrow in Knights Hall for day two of the Bellarmine Invitational. George Washington squares off with Tennessee State at 11 a.m. while the Knights tangle with the Tigers at 5 p.m.
