LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Despite a commendable effort, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team couldn't quite achieve a positive result against Louisville on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium, as the Cardinals scored in double overtime to capture a 1-0 win over the Knights.
In the 105th minute, Louisville (2-1) had a takeaway from Bellarmine (2-1) about 5 yards outside of the box. Dante Huckaby and Brandon McManus executed a give-and-go to precision, with Huckaby tapping to McManus and McManus immediately using a back kick to pass back to a charging Huckaby, who ripped an open shot from 17 yards inside the far post for the golden goal.
About a minute earlier, junior forward
Juan Ballas made a clutch defensive save for Bellarmine, heading out the potential game-winning goal inches before it broke the goal line, but the Knights couldn't dodge the next bullet from the Cardinals.
Louisville was on the attack for much of the contest and finished with a 17-4 advantage in shots and 15-6 edge in corner kicks, but Bellarmine's defense was sturdy and didn't allow the Cardinals many clean chances — only three of their shots were on goal. Penetrating Louisville's defense proved exceedingly difficult, as the Cardinals yielded just one shot on goal.
It was the second straight overtime affair for Bellarmine, which defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 1-0 on the road Sunday.
The contest marked the first between Bellarmine and Louisville as Division I counterparts. When the Knights were in D2, the two teams played regularly from 1979-91. The Cardinals' win on Friday actually evened the all-time series at 6-6-3.
Bellarmine will meet Chicago State at 3 p.m. (ET) Monday at DePaul University.
