Knights close busy week with Saturday game at FGCU

1/28/2022 1:28:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine men's basketball team will play its fourth game in the span of one week on Saturday when the Knights travel to Fort Myers, Florida to take on Florida Gulf Coast University in Alico Arena. The ASUN Conference matchup is set for 7 p.m.

Bellarmine's challenging week started with a home overtime win over Jacksonville in Freedom Hall on Saturday, followed by a lengthy bus trip to Jacksonville, Alabama for a make-up game with the Gamecocks on Monday night.  After returning to Louisville, the Knights flew to Orlando, Florida for a Thursday clash with ASUN East rival Stetson at the Edmunds Center in DeLand.

Now waiting at the end of the trip, is another stiff challenge as the FGCU Eagles (13-8, 3-4) feature a lineup that is formidable both inside and out.

Although FGCU is known as Dunk City, the 2021-22 Eagle squad is earning the reputation as a prolific 3-point shooting team. So far this year, FGCU has launched 592 treys—seventh most in the nation.  The Eagles also are among the national leaders in assists, ranking 21st with 16.6.

The Eagles have a wealth of new talent that is making quite an impact. Despite being listed at just 5-8 and 155 pounds, Tavian Dunn-Martin is coming up huge for FGCU year. The graduate transfer from Duquesne is creating a lot of offense for the Eagles. As the leading assist man in the ASUN Conference at 5.8 per game, he gets a lot of teammates in the scoring column. He's also quite adept at putting the ball in the basket himself, averaging 18.8 points per game and ranking 10th in the nation in 3-pointers attempted (160) and 21st in the nation in 3-pointers made (59).

Another transfer having a big impact for the Eagles is 6-11, 255-pound Kevin Samuel. The TCU transfer is physically imposing and lives up to his looks with his play on the court. He is the ASUN's leading rebounder (9.9 rpg) and shot blocker (3.0 bpg), and he's second in the league in field goal percentage at 65.6 percent.  Samuel is the second-leading scorer for FGCU at 11.5 per game.

A third transfer, 6-1 guard Matt Halvorsen also is making a solid contribution to the Eagles' squad averaging 7.8 points and is the second-leading 3-point shooter with 42 on the season.

Despite the influx of new talent, FGCU still has its top two scorers from last year's team in the starting lineup. Cyrus Largie and Caleb Catto each averaged more than 13 points a game last year, and while those numbers have dropped a bit this year to make room for the transfers, both are having solid seasons in 2022. Largie is putting up 11.2 points per game and is one of the ASUN's top defenders, averaging 1.6 steals per game. Catto is averaging 8.3 points a game and is third on the team in 3-pointers with 34.

Bellarmine (12-9, 6-1 ASUN) is getting production from a variety of sources as well.  Dylan Penn is the reigning ASUN Player of the Week after averaging 24.5 points per game last week.  However, in the last two games, it's been CJ Fleming carrying most of the scoring load, tossing in 17 against Jacksonville State and 21 at Stetson.

Juston Betz, the Knights' leading rebounder at 6.9 per game, also is helping shoulder some of the scoring load of late. He netted a career-high 19 points on Thursday as he hit nine of 10 shots from the field.

As a team, Bellarmine leads the league in assist to turnover ratio at 1.42 to 1, and Coach Scott Davenport's squad has been especially stingy with the ball over the last five games, averaging just seven turnovers per game.
