Big run spurs ASUN leader FGCU's win over Knights

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A 25-0 run bridging the second and third quarters by Florida Gulf Coast University propelled the Eagles to a 98-66 win over the Bellarmine University women's basketball team Saturday in ASUN action at Alico Arena.

Bailee Harney once again was the leading scorer for Bellarmine (3-16, 0-8 ASUN), dropping in 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting against conference leader FGCU (19-1, 8-0). The senior guard has paced the Knights in the point column in six of the last seven games.

Junior guard Jaela Johnson tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists while freshman forward Haley Stoklosa and sophomore guard Mackenzie Keelin were close to double figures with nine points each. Senior guard Presley Brown dished out five assists for the Knights, who posted their highest-scoring outing in ASUN play of the season.

At the same time, Bellarmine allowed its most points in conference action against FGCU, which is ranked No. 20 in the WBCA poll and essentially No. 26 in the Associated Press poll. The Eagles received another monster performance from guard Tishara Morehouse, who piled up a game-high 28 points after scoring 33 Thursday against Eastern Kentucky.

FGCU held a 30-17 lead after one quarter as the Eagles attacked the basket and converted on 10 layups. Bellarmine switched to a zone defense in the second period, and the Knights rallied after FGCU was cold in the quarter from 3-point range.

Bellarmine followed a 7-0 run that was capped by a traditional three-point play by senior guard Kathleen Scott with a 9-0 run punctuated by five points from Harney, the latter chunk tying the game at 37 with 3:45 left before halftime. The Knights trailed FGCU 48-41 at the break, but they outscored the Eagles 24-18 and hit 10 of their 14 shots (71.4 percent) in the stanza.

"We talked about scoring early in the shot clock, scoring early when we had a first open look, and we executed it," Coach Chancellor Dugan said of the second period. "That's the first quarter we've won in a long time. I was really proud of them. We also rebounded so well in that second quarter."

Unfortunately, FGCU created some room at the end of the second quarter by sinking a pair of 3-pointers in the last 40 seconds. In the third, the Eagles picked up right where they left off, eventually extending their run to 25-0 and building a 67-41 advantage. They ended up shooting 50 percent from the floor for the game and heated up from deep with 13 3-pointers after an erratic start from long range.

"We came out in the third quarter and were just trying to look for the perfect shot instead of taking the first good shot. We just needed to be ready and shoot the ball," Dugan said. "We've got to know who we are and what we want to do. That's how we want to play. …(Defensively) when you play a top-25 team, you have to be on your toes and know what everybody else on the other team does."

Bellarmine will host Liberty at 11 a.m. (ET) Thursday in Freedom Hall.
