LOUISVILLE, Ky.—A pair of second half goals by Bellarmine's
Amber Hofenk Jerembo lifted the Knights past the Longwood Lancers by the final score of 2-1 in Mid-American Conference field hockey action on Saturday at Trager Field.
While the visiting Lancers controlled offensive possession most of the game, Bellarmine made the most of its opportunities. Or, perhaps more accurately, Hofenk Jerembo made the most of her opportunities.
After a scoreless first half, the third quarter offered more offense. After video review nullified a Lancer goal, Hofenk Jerembo gained possession deep in the BU circle, and although her first shot was smothered by Longwood goalie Lara Van Nunen, the Bellarmine senior gathered up the rebound and slid a shot into the left side of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Longwood had a near-immediate answer as just two minutes later Floor Shouten deflected in a rocket from the stick of Kolbey Donahue on a penalty corner to knot the score at one apiece.
Then early in the fourth period, Hofenk Jerembo got loose on a breakaway. After entering the left side of the circle, she veered to right and beat Van Nunen in the 1v1 situation with a shot in the right side of the goal.
From there, the Knights limited Longwood to just two more shots on goal, and Bellarmine keeper
Danni Swallow was equal to the task, preserving the win for the Knights.
"What a gritty win!" exclaimed Bellarmine Coach
Devanny Boisvert after the game. "This week we've been focusing on our circle defense and limiting the amount of corners, and I was happy to see the defensive effort all across the field today. Amber continues to find the back of the cage and has been a positive threat in the circle for us."
Final statistics show that Bellarmine's defense was under pressure today as Longwood outshot the Knights 13-10, and the visitors earned seven penalty corners compared to just four for Bellarmine.
"Bellarmine field hockey was tough today," Boisvert said. "Even though it wasn't perfect from start to finish, we dug deep and pulled out another MAC win."
Bellarmine improves to 2-8 overall with a 2-1 mark in MAC play. The Lancers fell to 2-8 (0-3, MAC).
The Knights return to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they'll host Queens University on "Faculty Appreciation Day."
