Field hockey tripped up by Ohio in conference match

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the first of two home contests this weekend, Bellarmine field hockey fell to Ohio University by a final score of 4-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Knights (4-12, 2-4 MAC) entered the day tied with Ohio (8-7, 3-3 MAC) for fifth place in the MAC standings.  With the loss, Bellarmine drops into sixth place.

All of Ohio's production came in the second half on Friday, as the score was tied 0-0 at halftime.  Despite six penalty corners and nine Bobcat shots in the first half, the Knights exited the first two quarters unscathed.  Grace Dukes recorded her eighth defensive save of the season in the first quarter, and Danni Swallow made six saves in the first half.

Ohio's fortunes turned, however, just over five minutes into the third quarter.  Merle Kal drove the end line and located Katelyn Whittle in front of goal, who guided the ball into the cage to give Ohio a 1-0 advantage.  Whittle struck again with under a minute left in the quarter, delivering a 2-0 lead for the Bobcats.

Bellarmine's defense held off Ohio through most of the fourth quarter and gave the BU offense a chance to carve into the lead.  Perhaps the highlight of the game for Bellarmine was Hannah Brown's sprinting defensive save with just under 10 minutes to play.  Sasha Dikotla chipped a shot towards a wide open goal and Brown came out of vision to tip it away.

Ohio would eventually pad its lead with under five minutes to go, receiving goals from Lucy Davis and Meela Kopp.

The Bobcats held a 16-7 edge in shots (12-4 SOG) and 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Swallow played the first three quarters, while Kailey Workman played the final 15 minutes for Bellarmine in goal.

The Knights are back in action for the final time at home on Sunday, when they host no. 18 Ohio State on Senior Day.  The seniors will be honored at approximately 12:30 p.m. before a 1:00 p.m. start time.  The match can be viewed on BU Knights Sports Network with Jeff Greer and Olivia Netzler-Gray on the call.
