LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine field hockey wrapped up its home schedule on Sunday, with a 5-1 loss to no. 18 Ohio State on Senior Day.
In their final game at Trager Stadium this season, the Knights (4-13, 2-4 MAC) fought valiantly against another ranked opponent. Bellarmine was tied with no. 24 Duke in the third quarter last weekend, and found itself tied with the Buckeyes (10-6, 3-4 B10) early in the third period. Ultimately, Ohio State generated too many good looks in the circle and pulled away for the victory.
Prior to the match, Bellarmine honored nine seniors:
Kennedy DeDario,
Julia Doornebos,
Grace Dukes,
Amber Hofenk Jerembo,
Katie Kimery,
Jensen Kitrel,
Alexa Rastigue,
Lindsay Sturgeon, and manager
Amber Downs. All eight senior players saw action during the match.
While Ohio State was creating shots in the first half, not many were able to sneak by goalkeeper
Danni Swallow. The Buckeyes racked up 15 shots in the first two quarters, but scored just once. Leanna Bough delivered Ohio State's first goal just under eight minutes into the game off a penalty corner. Bellarmine would hold OSU scoreless the rest of the first half with palpable effort in the midfield and seven first-half saves from Swallow.
In the third quarter, Bellarmine tied the game 1-1 off a corner set.
Anna Crump found
Amber Hofenk Jerembo right of the cage, and the senior striker delivered her team-high 12th goal of the season.
Ohio State responded in a big way, however, scoring less than two minutes later. McKenna Webster tallied the game-winning goal, would score again later in the third, and add another in the fourth period for a hat-trick performance. Delaney Lawler scored the remaining goal for Ohio State.
On the afternoon, OSU out-shot Bellarmine 26-6 and totaled 16 penalty corners. Hofenk Jerembo led Bellarmine with three shots, while Rastigue recorded a defensive save in the first period.
In goal,
Danni Swallow made a career-high 11 saves over three quarters of action, while
Kailey Workman made two saves playing the fourth quarter in cage.
Bellarmine wraps up its season on the road next weekend with contests at Kent State on Friday (3pm) and Saint Francis on Sunday (11am).
