Crump tallies lone goal for Knights in 4-1 loss at Kent State

KENT, Ohio – In their final MAC contest of the season, the Bellarmine Knights field hockey team fell by a final score of 4-1 at Kent State on Friday afternoon.

The first quarter was active for both teams, and Kent State came out with the first punch.  The Golden Flashes scored just over eight minutes in on a penalty corner set.  Maria Cambra Soler provided the final swing to give KSU a 1-0 advantage.

Bellarmine had a quick response, however, and it came just over a minute later.  The Knights earned a penalty corner of their own, and Anna Crump cashed in from the top of the circle off passes from Grace Dukes and Peyton Hobson for the goal.  Crump's goal was her fourth of the season and evened the match 1-1 in the first period.

Kent State and Cambra Soler had another push in the first quarter though, and the Golden Flashes took back the lead 2-1 on Cambra Soler's second goal of the day.

The highlight of the second period came from freshman goalkeeper Kailey Workman who stopped a penalty stroke attempt from Patricia Strunk.  Workman immediately stepped to her left on the whistle, which was the correct move, as she was in perfect position to swat away the try.

Despite being out-shot 8-2 in the first half, Bellarmine entered the break down 2-1.  The KSU attack persisted in the second half, however, as the Golden Flashes totaled four penalty corners in the third period.  Jenna McCrudden scored five minutes into the second half, extending Kent State's lead to 3-1.  KSU added more insurance in the fourth period as Strunk scored with under four minutes to play.

On the day, Kent State held a 15-5 edge in shots (8-3 in SOG).  KSU also had an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Workman made four saves, including the penalty corner stop, in goal for the Knights.

Bellarmine wraps up its season on Sunday morning at Saint Francis with start time scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Loretto, Penn.
