LOUISVILLE, Ky.—In the immortal words of Yogi Berra, it was like déjà vu all over again.
For the second time in three days, Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky squared off on the volleyball court, and for the second straight time, the Knights pulled off a come-from-behind win in capturing the ASUN Conference contest.
Sunday's match, which was played at BU's Knights Hall, was a little less dramatic, however. Today, Bellarmine dropped the first set then won three straight to post the 3-1 win. On Friday in Richmond, the Knights fell behind 0-2 then made a fifth set comeback for the win.
As in Friday's contest, Eastern Kentucky opened in dominating style. The Colonels rolled to a 25-13 win in the first set as they held the Knights to a negative hitting percentage while swinging at a .250 clip.
Bellarmine Coach
Rick Nold changed his rotation pattern in the second set to keep either
Bailey Venard or
Jayme Scott on the front row, and that duo delivered in a big way. Venard, a junior who notched a career high with 24 kills on Friday, again was the match's leading hitter with 20 kills on Sunday. Scott, who sat out the first set, stormed onto the scene with seven kills in the second frame and finished with 18.
The Knights also saw a dramatic increase in their offensive efficiency, posting three straight sets of .300 or better hitting. Even with the negative percentage in the first set, the Knights finished .234 overall while limiting the Colonels to .133.
The change in fortunes saw the Knights sweep the final three sets 25-16, 25-20, 25-17. The transformation also showed up on the stat sheet as Bellarmine chalked up big advantages in kills (60-38) and digs (67-54).
"I couldn't be more proud of this team," said Nold. "I thought our players made great adjustments after the first game and from Friday. A weekend sweep in this conference is a huge statement for our program that we can continue to build on these next few weeks."
In addition to Venard's and Scott's stellar performances, several other Knights stuffed the stat sheet. Bellarmine setter
Emily Arnold stayed on the floor the entire match for the Knights and her 47 assists were more than Eastern's total as a team (35). Freshman
Kylie VanHoy, meanwhile, was solid at the net both offensively and defensively, recording 10 kills and five blocks.
Three different Knights reached double digits in digs.
Carissa Reyes and
Anna Lococo tied for the team lead with 13 while Arnold secured a double-double with 10 digs.
Eastern Kentucky's Sarah Mitchell and Carson Ledford paced the Colonel offense with eight kills apiece while Molly Michalak was the EKU digs leader with 19.
Bellarmine improves to 10-12 overall and 4-6 in the ASUN while EKU slips to 12-12, 3-7 ASUN.
The Knights stay home for their next two matches, entertaining ASUN foes Jacksonville and North Florida on Friday and Saturday.
