LOUISVILLE, Ky.—When the Bellarmine Knights visit the Farris Center on Wednesday at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CT) to take on host Central Arkansas, it will be an interesting matchup as BU is one of the toughest in-conference road teams in the country while the Bears have proven to be a tough out on their home floor.
Over the past two seasons, the Knights are 11-1 when playing on the road in conference play, a record so strong only the top-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs can claim a better mark over the same period. Conversely, the Bears are 6-2 at home this year but are 2-14 outside of Conway, Arkansas. The two losses UCA suffered at home were by slim margins, with Florida Gulf Coast University going overtime to nip the Bears 95-93 and Jacksonville State taking an 86-81 decision.
Both Bellarmine (15-11, 9-3 ASUN) and Central Arkansas (8-16, 5-6 ASUN) enter Wednesday's game on high notes. The Bears went on the road to get revenge on JSU by defeating the Gamecocks 72-62 on Saturday. The Knights, meanwhile, come in after road wins over North Florida and North Alabama.
Each team also has a player on something of a roll. Bellarmine's
CJ Fleming is averaging 23.7 points over the past three games and UCA's Camren Hunter is the ASUN's reigning Newcomer of the Week after stuffing the stat sheet with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against Jacksonville State.
Interestingly, neither player had big games in the first meeting between Bellarmine and the Bears. Fleming scored five and Hunter just three in a game that was dominated by the Knights'
Dylan Penn, who poured in 38 points on 18-of-22 shooting.
That contest, an 85-63 victory for Bellarmine at Freedom Hall, saw the Knights turn in their second-best shooting performance of the year (63.2%) to outpace the Bears who had their seventh-best shooting game of the year at 47.1 percent.
Hunter's strong play of late has given him the team lead in scoring this season, as he tops four double-digit scorers with a 13.6 average. Darious Hall is right on his heels at 13.4 per game while Eddy Kayouloud and Collin Cooper average 10.9 and 10.3 respectively.
Penn continues to lead the Knights in scoring with a 16.6 average and assists with a 5.1 average—both rank third in the ASUN. Fleming's offensive production has risen to 14.6 per game, and
Juston Betz is the leading Bellarmine rebounder at 7.0 per game, which ties him for third in the league with UCA's Hall.
Wednesday's game will be the Knights' third straight road contest. The next home game for Bellarmine is Sunday when the Knights host Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. in Freedom Hall. Heading into Wednesday's games JSU and BU are tied atop the ASUN West Division standings at 9-3.
