LYNCHBURG, Va. — Day three of the CCSA Championships brought quite a few positives for Bellarmine swimming on Friday.
Matthew Sims attempted to defend his conference title in the highly-anticipated 200 butterfly. Sims recorded the fastest time in prelims (1:46.70), but came up just short in the finals, earning silver behind Rateb Hussein of Florida Atlantic. Sims actually improved his time in the finals (1:46.04), but Hussein posted a very impressive run of 1:44.94 for the gold.
Bellarmine also had a strong performance in the women's 200 butterfly from
Anna Holt. She just missed out on a medal, placing fifth – the top finish by a women's swimmer in any event so far this week.
The men's relay team struck with another program record, this time in the 800 freestyle relay. After breaking the Bellarmine record in the 200 freestyle, M. Sims,
Brandon Thomas,
Greyson Williams, and
Daniel Sims teamed up to set another new top mark. They finished fifth, but completed the race in 6:49.94, making more program history.
Other highlights from Friday included D. Sims finishing eighth in the 100 breaststroke, followed by
Andrew Nguyen in ninth.
Elizabeth Schrenger raced to 13
th in the 100 breaststroke for the women with
Morgan Bender behind her in 17
th.
The Knights conclude the CCSA Championships on Saturday.
