LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team had one last opportunity to claim an ASUN victory in Freedom Hall this season, and the Knights seized it.
As senior guard
Presley Brown took over in the second half, so did the Knights, as they rolled to a 68-48 victory Thursday over ASUN West rival Lipscomb in their regular-season home finale.
Five players scored in double figures for Bellarmine (4-22, 1-14 ASUN), which secured its first conference win of the season. In the locker room afterward, the Knights doused Coach
Chancellor Dugan with water after the commanding victory over the Bisons (9-19, 4-11).
"I'm just glad they got that monkey off their back, because I'll tell you what: They worked hard to get that off them," Dugan said. "Number one, there's a lot of joy. And just a lot of relief. It's been a while since we've tasted this, and there's nothing sweeter than winning."
Brown piled up 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half and hauled in a game-best eight rebounds with three steals. Senior guard
Bailee Harney registered 13 points and six rebounds, senior guard
Kathleen Scott tallied 11 points and a game-high six assists, sophomore guard
Mackenzie Keelin notched 11 points and sophomore guard
Claire Knies chipped in 10 points.
"A lot of people contributed tonight," Dugan said. "Players came in and did a lot of good things."
With 2:35 left in the third quarter, Bellarmine was clinging to a 34-32 lead. Brown proceeded to score the final six points in a 9-4 run to close the period that pushed the Knights' advantage to 43-36.
In the fourth quarter, Brown picked up right where she left off, scoring seven points and making a beautiful wraparound pass to a cutting Knies for a layup during an 11-2 burst to open the period. After Harney spotted Scott for a reverse layup, Keelin buried a 3-pointer as Bellarmine's lead ballooned to 20.
"She was just so aggressive," Dugan said of Brown, who converted on 6-of-9 shots in the second half. "Coach
Raven Merriweather talked to her in the quarter break and told her 'You've got to go. You have to be aggressive and want to score.' Presley just listened to what she said."
After Keelin's aforementioned 3-pointer, the Knights' advantage never dipped below 15 and rose to as high as 21.
"These last probably 10 games we've played we've been right there," Dugan said. "It's been one quarter here or one loose possession or possessions, but we've gotten better and better."
Bellarmine shot 50 percent from the field, its highest effort in conference play. At 31 boards to the 28 of Lipscomb, the Knights outrebounded an opponent for the first time in ASUN play. Their 17 assists were a season high in ASUN games. They outscored the Bisons 42-24 in the second half.
"You couldn't ask for anything better," Dugan said. "It was such a great win. This team has just been through so much adversity this whole year, and they stuck with it."
Bellarmine will conclude the regular season at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Eastern Kentucky.
