Softball opens home schedule with doubleheaders against Green Bay and Western Michigan

LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Bellarmine softball opens its home schedule this weekend as they host Green Bay and Western Michigan to Knights Field. 
 
Each team will play a double-header on Saturday and Sunday, compiling four total games over the weekend.  Bellarmine (4-6) first faces Green-Bay at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday followed by a 1:00 p.m. matchup with Western Michigan.  The Knights then play the Phoenix and Broncos at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively on Sunday to wrap up the weekend. 
 
Green Bay and WMU play each other in neutral site games at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
 
Bellarmine is coming off a trip to Western Kentucky for the Hilltopper Classic.  The Knights went 1-4 last weekend, including a win over tournament runner-up Southeast Missouri State.  BU previously posted a 3-2 record at the Paladin Invitational in South Carolina, with a Sunday sweep to end the weekend.
 
Green Bay is 4-5, alternating wins and losses so far this season.  Their victories have come against Incarnate Word, Prairie View A&M, and Cleveland State.  The Phoenix are led by Tiffany Giese who is batting .345.  Three separate players – Samantha Saloun, Becca Edwards, and Isabella Curtin have two home runs each for Green Bay.  The Phoenix were picked to finish fifth out of 10 teams in the Horizon League pre-season poll after finishing 18-18 in the Horizon last season.
 
Western Michigan is off to a 1-4 start this year.  The Broncos have lost four in a row after a season-opening win against Eastern Illinois.  WMU had last weekend off after playing in the DePaul Dome Tournament two weeks ago.  Western's games in Louisville will mark their first outdoors this season.  The Broncos were picked to finish 10th out of 11 teams in the MAC preseason poll after going 15-37 (11-27 MAC) last year, including two losses to Bellarmine at Knights Field.  BU topped WMU 4-1 in the first meeting and 2-1 in the second game.
 
Grace Werner tops BU in batting average at .318.  Alexis Hargrove and Hannah Webb lead Bellarmine with 6 RBI this season while both also batting .300 or better.  Carson Goatley has a team-best 3.50 in the circle and team-high 25 strikeouts.
