LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine men's basketball team plays the first of three straight ASUN Conference road games on Wednesday when the Knights will be in Jacksonville, Florida to take on the North Florida Ospreys at 7 p.m.
The Knights and the Ospreys are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to momentum. While Bellarmine rolled to a 7-1 start in league play, UNF opened 1-7. However, the Knights have dropped two straight games while the Ospreys have won two in a row, including an impressive 88-76 victory at Jacksonville State that gave the Gamecocks their first league loss.
North Florida, like the Knights, haven't shied away from stiff competition this season. The Ospreys' nonconference schedule included the likes of UCLA, Kentucky and Texas Tech (all currently ranked in top 25). The NCAA NET ratings have UNF's nonconference strength of schedule ranked fourth in the nation.
Bellarmine, which has the NCAA's second toughest nonconference strength of schedule, has squared off against five teams currently ranked in the top 25: Gonzaga (No. 2), Purdue (No. 3), UCLA (No. 12), St. Mary's (No. 22) and Murray State (No. 23).
The Ospreys are being led by 6-1 guard Jose Placer who averages 15. 2 points a game with Kentucky native Carter Hendricksen adding 12.6 per contest.
North Florida ranks fourth in the ASUN with 239 treys on the year, and four different Osprey players have at least 42 trifectas on the year with Jarius Hicklen leading the way with 61.
Bellarmine is led by two players who are both members of the Knights' 1,000-point club. Senior Dylan Penn is the top scorer at 17.1 points per game while graduate student CJ Fleming adds 13.8. Juston Betz, a 6-3 graduate student, is the Knights' top rebounder at 6.9 per game.
