LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine men's tennis team had plenty to celebrate on Friday evening. Most importantly, the Knights captured their first ASUN victory in the Division I era with a 5-2 win over Lipscomb at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
Bellarmine (5-9, 1-2 ASUN) also extended its home winning streak to five. The Knights last played at home on March 6th, but the nearly three-week wait was worth it.
BU fell behind early after a pair of Lipscomb wins in doubles. The Knights lone doubles victory came from
Joseph Naville and
Emil B. Berglund, winning by a final score of 6-2 in the no. 3 slot.
Singles, however, is where Bellarmine dominated.
Cole Groetsch set the tone at no. 1, taking down Maksim Bogdanovich 6-4, 7-5.
Jack Batchelor followed with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Alex Mesquida in the no. 2 position.
Paul Reynolds kept it rolling with a 7-6, 7-5 win at no. 3 singles. Berglund used three sets to defeat Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Finally,
Xavier Ecarma also used three sets to win against Sam Fischer 6-4, 6-3, 11-9.
After losing last season's match to Lipscomb 5-2, the Knights returned the favor this season to capture their first ASUN victory. Next, Bellarmine faces Jacksonville State for the first time in program history – the match begins at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
