LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine men's tennis is heading to back to class next week on a high note after taking down Tennessee State by a final score of 5-2 on Saturday - the team's first Division I win of the season.
The Knights have now won four consecutive home matches, with the previous three coming against IU-Southeast, West Liberty, and Campbellsville.
Bellarmine started strong in doubles, handling the no. 1 and no. 2 slots.
Paul Reynolds and
Donovan Ecarma teamed up for a 7-5 win against Pierre Copin and Daniel Caraballo as the top doubles team.
Cole Groetsch and
Jack Batchelor also were victorious at no. 2 doubles, cruising past Leandros Misdrachis and Maksims Kazijevs 6-1. With those two wins, Bellarmine secured the doubles point.
In singles, the Knights received wins from their top three players. Groetsch beat Nil Moinet at no. 1 singles in comeback fashion - 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. At no. 2 singles,
Jack Batchelor bested Copin 6-2, 6-4, while Reynolds defeated Kazijevs 6-2, 6-2 at no. 3. BU also got a win at no. 5 singles from
Donovan Ecarma, who topped Diego Britt-Alvarez 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
The Knights return to the road their next four matches, starting with a trip to Belmont on Friday, March 11.
