LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University track and field teams will host the second annual Jim Vargo Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Including Bellarmine, 26 teams are expected to have athletes competing at the meet. Action both days is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with throwing events.

In addition to Bellarmine, teams anticipated to be represented are: Aquinas College, Asbury, Centre, Campbellsville, Davenport, Evansville, Eastern Kentucky, Ferris State, Illinois Springfield, Indianapolis, Kentucky State, Lawrence Tech, Midway, Morehead State, Ohio Christian, Purdue Northwest, Shawnee State, Spalding, Southern Indiana, Thomas More, Tiffin, Transylvania, Trevecca Nazarene, Wright State and Xavier.

Now a coach emeritus with the Knights' track and field and cross country programs, Vargo is a legend at Bellarmine, building that status first as a student-athlete who helped lead BU to two appearances in the NCAA Cross Country Championships (1980 and 1982), finished second at the 1982 NCAA Midwest Region Cross Country Championships and was the Great Lakes Valley Conference's first 10000-meter champion while setting numerous program records.

Vargo's legend at Bellarmine was further cemented as a longtime coach. In 2000, he was hired as Bellarmine's Director of Cross Country and Track and Field. The Knights' men's cross country team earned berths in the NCAA Championships in 2010 and 2017, while the women harriers secured a spot to nationals in 2012. Women's track and field captured GLVC indoor titles in 2012 and 2013.

Vargo was inducted into the Bellarmine Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 for his individual athletic achievements and again in 2010 as a member of the 1982 cross country team that finished seventh at the NCAA Championships.
