LOCK HAVEN, Pa. —The Bellarmine field hockey opened its 2022 season on Friday, falling by a final score of 4-1 to Rider in a neutral site game on the campus of Lock Haven University.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Broncos tallied two goals within five minutes in the second period to take a 2-0 lead at the half.
Rider tacked on another score late in the third quarter to see their lead swell to 3-0.
The Knights answered in the early stages of the fourth quarter, tallying their first goal of the year. Stemming from a penalty corner, Bellarmine fired multiple shots at the Rider cage, before senior
Amber Hofenk Jerembo finally knocked the ball in off an
Anna Crump shot that was saved. Hofenk Jerembo led the Knights with seven goals last season, while Crump had six goals last year.
About 90 seconds later, Rider gained some insurance with its fourth goal of the game off a penalty corner. Hofenk Jerembo and the Knights would record one more shot in the final stretch but were unable to rally.
While the Broncos maintained control after the second quarter, the shot disparity was minimal. Rider only out-shot the Knights 8-6 and held just a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Two of Rider's goals started with penalty corners, and the Broncos held an edge in total corners taken 7-3. Bellarmine was whistled for a pair of yellow cards as well.
Crump (two shots) and
Julia Doornebos (one shot) were the other players alongside Hofenk Jerembo to record a shot on Friday. In goal, freshman
Kailey Workman made her first career start for the Knights and made a pair of saves, while junior
Danni Swallow played the final quarter.
The Knights are back in action on Sunday against host Lock Haven starting at 11:00 a.m.
