Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Jack Kizer

Despite strong defensive effort, field hockey falls at Lock Haven in double overtime

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Bellarmine field hockey concluded its weekend in central Pennsylvania with a marathon 1-0 loss in double overtime to Lock Haven on Sunday afternoon.

Following a 4-1 defeat versus Rider on Friday, it was a valiant effort from the Bellarmine (0-2) defense. After a stalemate lasting over 70 minutes, however, Lock Haven (2-0) found the back of the cage fifty seconds into the second extra period.  Martina Spangenberg received a pass from Brooke Hofsass near the edge of the circle right of the cage and angled it inside the far post for the game-winning goal.

"It was exciting to see our progress from Friday's game to today," Head Coach Devanny Boisvert said.  "We focused on limiting the amount of turnovers, having defensive pressure, and bringing energy - and the team brought that from beginning to end.  I was proud of our effort although it did not fall in our favor."

Despite a consistent wave of penalty corners for the Bald Eagles throughout the match, Bellarmine's defense held strong.  Lock Haven totaled 11 penalty corners, and the Knights continuously thwarted the attack.  Most of those chances for LHU did not materialize into shots on goal, as the Bald Eagles took 11 shots with only four on goal.

Lock Haven applied early pressure with four corners and two shots in the first period, while Bellarmine's first corner did not come until late in the third quarter.  The third period is when Lock Haven tallied a good chunk of its shots with five during the third frame.

The Knights managed three shots for the match, the first being a shot on goal in the second quarter from Amber Hofenk Jerembo who scored on Friday.   Peyton Hobson had a shot go wide in the third, while Teresa Schmidt's shot in the first overtime was saved by Lock Haven goalkeeper Kelsey Felix.

Despite the offensive advantage for the Bald Eagles, Bellarmine maintained possession for most of the final few minutes in regulation and lengthy stretches in overtime, but the Knights were unable to organize a strong enough push.

Goalkeeper Kailey Workman made three saves on the afternoon and played every minute.

"We hung with a talented Lock Haven team and showed a lot of nice possession in the overtime periods," Boisvert added.  "Our defense did a great job at stepping and intercepting in the backfield, which allowed us to generate the attack.  We need to do a better job at creating more opportunities in the circle because our forwards can be a threat."

The Knights continue their four-match road stretch to open the season with a west coast trip next weekend.  Bellarmine starts with The University of California on Friday at 9:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. PT) before facing UC-Davis on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET (9:00 a.m. PT).
