BERKELEY, Calif. — In its first of two games in California this weekend, Bellarmine field hockey fell to California Berkeley by a final score of 4-1 on Friday night.
The Knights (0-3) met the Golden Bears (1-2) for the first time ever on Friday, and Cal came out on top for its first win of the season.
Just over five minutes into the match California generated a pair of penalty corners leading to the first goal from Monica Arteaga. Jane Onners fired a shot that was deflected by Arteaga and found the back of the cage to give the Bears a quick 1-0 advantage.
California then extended its lead approximately 12 minutes later with a goal from Sabine Hommes that snuck inside the top right post, giving the Bears a 2-0 edge in the second quarter.
Bellarmine clawed back into the match just before halftime, however, starting with a penalty corner from
Peyton Hobson.
Julia Doornebos had the initial shot off the corner, but it was saved by Cal goalkeeper Cato Knipping. That led to another corner for Hobson and the Knights, but this time
Isabel Gladys sent the ball into the cage for her first career goal. Doornebos was credited with her first assist of the season and the fifth of her young career.
"I was happy to see our fight at the end of the second and beginning of the third quarters today," Knights Head Coach
Devanny Boisvert said. "We need to show some consistency through the quarters of play and be able to capitalize on opportunities in our attack 25. We had plenty of circle entries, but now we need to execute. We executed on a beautiful corner play with an insert from
Peyton Hobson, smooth sweep from
Julia Doornebos, and perfect tip finish from
Isabel Gladys. We have a few areas we need to improve on in practice tomorrow to now focus on UC-Davis."
Gladys' goal pulled Bellarmine within one at halftime. The Bears formed a quick attack in the third quarter though, and a pair of corners led to a Rachel Buttinger goal that extended Cal's lead to 3-1 at the 36 minute mark. Before the period was over, Arteaga scored her second goal of the match with 13 seconds left in the third quarter to push California ahead 4-1.
Despite a pair of penalty corners from Bellarmine, the Knights were unable to score the remainder of the game and fell by three.
California created nine penalty corners compared to Bellarmine's five, while the Golden Bears outshot the Knights 13-7. Doornebos had two shots on goal while
Anna Crump had one.
Kailey Workman made two saves in her third start in goal for the Knights this season, while
Danni Swallow made one save during the fourth quarter.
Bellarmine concludes its season-opening road stretch at UC-Davis on Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. ET (9:00 a.m. PT).
