BOARDMAN, Ohio—The Bellarmine women's golf team opened its 2022-23 campaign with a strong runner-up finish at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational hosted by Youngstown State University at Mill Creek (North Course).
Led by graduate transfer
Elizabeth Duncan's one-over-par 72 and a 73 by senior
Alaina Schmitt, the Knights opened with team score of 305 on the Donald Ross-designed links, placing them in second place overall.
In Tuesday's closing round, the Knights actually increased their lead over third place by firing a team score of 304 to finish at 609. Bellarmine was 24 shots behind the host Penguins and nine shots clear of the third place Cleveland State Vikings. Both of Bellarmine's 18-hole scores (304 and 305) rank among the top seven in program history.
In terms of individual play, it was almost a reversal of fortunes for the Knights on day two. While Schmitt posted another solid round of 76 to finish tied for sixth in the field,
Matti Spalding trimmed nine shots off her opening 81 for a closing 73, and
Jessica Stephens bettered her opening round by four shots for a final round 74 and a T-9 finish. Duncan and
Caroline McCrorey both closed with 81s for the Knights.
Puthita Khuanrudee of Youngstown State was the lone player under par, firing rounds of 72 and 69 to finish three shots ahead of co-runners-up Sabrina Coffman of Cleveland State and Ariel Chang of Detroit Mercy.
The Knights return to the links on Sept. 26 when they'll tee it up in the two-day, 54-hole Austin Peay Invitational in Clarksville, Tennessee.
