HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Bellarmine University men's cross country team dropped dynamite on the program record book Friday morning at John Hunt Park in the North Alabama Showcase.
Behind an electrifying Bellarmine debut by sophomore
Paul Stamm, the Knights men delivered six all-time top-50 performances in the 8k, making this one of the greatest team efforts in program history. Bellarmine's women also had some distinguished performances, receiving two that ranked in the all-time top 50 in the 5k.
A transfer from Xavier who recorded the ninth-fastest 8k time in Musketeers history as a freshman, Stamm wasted no time in revealing his potential with Bellarmine. His 24:26.93 finish ranked as the third-fastest 8k time in program history, trailing only two performances by three-time Division II All-American Chris Striegel (23:59.04 and 24:02.23), which places Stamm second on the performance list (measures PR). He placed 37th overall at the meet.
Nolan Hester sealed a second all-time top-10 performance after crossing the finish line in 24:46.20. The sophomore clocked the sixth-fastest time in program history while placing 65th overall. Hester skyrocketed from 17th to fourth on the performance list.
Like Hester,
D.K. Schnieders made a dramatic climb up the performance list, rising from 18th to eighth after finishing in 24:57.17. The sophomore posted the 14th-best time in program history and placed 83rd overall.
Hunter Griffin had a breakout performance. The sophomore registered the 21st-best time in program history and cracked the performance list in 12th after finishing in 25:05.85. He placed 92nd overall.
In the first 8k race of his collegiate career,
Nolan White excelled after finishing in 25:12.58, which ranks 35th in program history and 18th on the performance list. The freshman took 105th overall.
Jackson Gawarecki had a breakthrough performance as well, clocking a 25:16.27 that ranks 41st in program history and 22nd on the performance list. The sophomore placed 110th overall.
Bellarmine's women did some rewriting of their record book as well.
Anna Wells posted the 36th-best 5k time in program history after finishing in 18:22.51 and placing 88th overall. The junior ascended from 13th to 10th on the performance list.
Dating back to last season's ASUN Championship,
Emma Wells has strung together three straight all-time top-50 performances. The latest came after the senior finished in 18:22.77, which ranks 37th in program history. Wells placed 90th overall.
Freshman
Sierra Oesterling (142nd, 18:48.05) came after the two Wells for Bellarmine followed by junior
Justice Pohlman-Singleton (153rd, 18:54.98), while senior
Chloe Powell (201st, 19:23.29) rounded out the Knights' top 5.
Bellarmine's men placed 13th overall — and second among the participating ASUN teams — in the field of 37. Alabama won the team title. The Tide also captured the women's crown. The Knights placed 18th of 39 teams.
Bellarmine will compete Oct. 1 in the Live in Louisville Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
