LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half en route to a 2-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in nonconference action Tuesday afternoon in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Sophomore forward
Chris Shust and junior forward
Nolan McGrath netted a goal apiece for Bellarmine (3-3-1), which snapped a two-game skid while defeating a former Division II GLVC rival in Purdue Fort Wayne (1-5-2).
Shust didn't have much luck in the first half, as one of his attempts caromed off the post. However, his fortunes changed in the second half when a Purdue Fort Wayne defender attempted to clear a Bellarmine service inside the goalie box, and it deflected just outside the 6. Shust pounced on the loose ball and ripped a shot into the net for his first collegiate goal.
Shust's eventual game-winner staked Bellarmine to a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute, and the Knights padded the advantage in the 76th minute when McGrath drilled a penalty kick. It was his team-best fourth goal of the season.
In his first collegiate start in goal,
Alex Lindewirth collected his first career shutout. The defense made sure the freshman goalkeeper didn't have a busy day, but he did make one diving stop and tallied two total saves.
Purdue Fort Wayne had multiple free kicks in close proximity to the box, but Bellarmine's defense snuffed out each opportunity. The Knights finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots, including 6-2 on frame.
Bellarmine returns to ASUN play with a 7 p.m. (ET) contest Saturday at Jacksonville.
