LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team will conclude the regular season with three ASUN home games, opening the stretch in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium by hosting FGCU at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday before welcoming Stetson at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Bellarmine (4-6-5, 1-4-3 ASUN) is 3-2-2 in Frazier Stadium this season. Most recently at home, the Knights set a D1-era program record for scoring in a 4-2 league win over Jacksonville and followed with another solid result in a 1-1 conference draw against North Florida.
FGCU (8-4-3, 5-1-2) is the reigning ASUN Tournament champion and is in the mix for this year's regular-season title, although the Eagles (17 points) would need help with three games left as they trail Lipscomb (22) and Central Arkansas (19). Bellarmine (6) is in 10th place, with North Florida (9) and Kennesaw State (8) occupying the 8-9 slots just ahead of the Knights as the conference's teams battle to earn berths in the eight-team ASUN Tournament.
FGCU is carrying a five-game unbeaten streak (three wins, two draws) and last week at home followed a 2-0 victory over Austin Peay with a 1-1 stalemate against Lipscomb, the latter representing the Bisons' only non-win in league play (7-0-1).
FGCU possesses two of the ASUN's most potent goal scorers in Erika Zschuppe and Kendal Gargiula, who are tied for second in the league with six apiece. Zschuppe tops the conference with seven assists and her 19 points rank second. Also ranking second in the ASUN is FGCU's offense (1.4 goals per game) while its defense ranks third (0.73 GAA).
Stetson plays Thursday at Eastern Kentucky before its meeting with Bellarmine. The Hatters own a 1-0 win over Jacksonville in league play. Annika Seem has tallied four goals to lead Stetson, which is coming off a 1-0 loss to Lipscomb and a scoreless draw against Austin Peay, both at home.
Behind three straight home games to close the regular season, Bellarmine will look to make a push into the ASUN's top 8 and wrangle a postseason bid. The Knights dropped a pair of conference road games last week, falling 2-0 at Central Arkansas and 2-1 at North Alabama.
Junior midfielder
Emma Nicholson notched her third goal of the season in the match against North Alabama. Nicholson, senior forward
Brielle Heuglin (four goals), freshman forward
Lauren Bingham (three), sophomore midfielder
Alexa Orozco (two) and sophomore forward
Rachel Skyberg (two) have all registered multiple goals after Orozco was the only Knight to accomplish the feat last season.
As Bellarmine enters the final stretch of the regular season, youth may be the Knights' most defining characteristic this year. Of the Knights' 13 leaders in minutes played among non-goalkeepers, 11 are either freshmen or sophomores. Freshman midfielder
Sydni Whitehead continues to top the team's chart with 1,277 minutes, along with being the team's assist leader (three).
NOTE: Thursday is the Katie's Save; Mental Health Awareness Game. Information about the Katie's Save Foundation can be found here.
