MUNCIE, Ind. — Bellarmine Field Hockey overcame a 2-0 deficit and pulled out a 3-2 overtime win on the road against the Ball State Cardinals on Friday afternoon. With the win, Bellarmine improves to 6-7 overall on the season and 3-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
Ball State drew first blood one minute into the game, as Kerrianne McClay scored off of a corner shot opportunity. Bellarmine afforded themselves their own opportunities, firing off five shots in the first half, including four in the second quarter, but were unable to capitalize as the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Knights got off three more shots early in the third quarter, but were again unable to put the ball in the net. The Cardinals added another goal at the 8:29 mark of the third quarter as Fleur Knopert scored off a pass from Emma Van Hal to make it 2-0. After being held without a shot for an 11-minute stretch, Bellarmine was finally able to get on the board as
Paige Hoyer scored her ninth goal of the season off of a pass from
Peyton Hobson with 32 seconds remaining in the third period to make it 2-1.
Bellarmine tied it up with 10:24 remaining in the fourth quarter with
Alicia Hudson getting an unassisted goal, her third of the season. The Knights held Ball State to just one shot in the final period and earned two more corner opportunities, but couldn't get the winner in regulation and the game headed to a golden goal overtime. Bellarmine pulled out the win 2:37 into the extra period as Hobson scored her sixth goal of the season off of a pass from
Anna Crump.
Hobson and Hoyer led the Knights with five shots and four shots on goal apiece.
Teresa Schmidt also fired off two shots on goal. After being outshot 5-1 in the first quarter, Bellarmine outshot Ball State 13-8 the rest of the way.
Kailey Workman played all 62:37 in cage, recording five saves. For Ball State, Hannah Johnston played all 62:37 at goalie, recording six saves.
Up next, the Knights will host a non-conference opponent in the Lindenwood Lions for senior day on Sunday, October 15 at 3 PM at Trager Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville.
