NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Belmont scored in the latter stage of the second half in defeating the Bellarmine University men's soccer team 1-0 in a nonconference match Tuesday at E.S. Rose Park.
Bellarmine (4-3-6) saw its five-game unbeaten streak snapped after an unlucky sequence on the goal by Belmont (8-4-2). It was the final nonconference game of the season for the Knights.
In the 77th minute, Belmont's Sam Rowan received a pass from A.J. Elliott about 25 yards away from the goal in the middle of the field. Rowan's one-timer deflected off a Knights defender who was attempting to block the shot, and unfortunately for Bellarmine, that changed the angle of the attempt and likely was the reason it found the net as senior goalkeeper
Matthew Brozovich had a bead on its original trajectory.
Belmont only held an 11-10 edge in shots, and Bellarmine had several opportunities. With roughly 10 minutes left, senior midfielder
Thomas Stickley made a nice cross from near the end line, but the Bruins were able to block the ensuing shot.
Bellarmine had one more highly dangerous chance. In the 88th minute, freshman defender
Karl Lundstrom Svahnqvist had an attempt from close range off a set piece that was saved by Patrick Schott.
Bellarmine returns to ASUN action when the Knights play at 4 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Jacksonville.
