LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine field hockey team chalked up another thrilling victory on Friday afternoon, pulling out its third overtime win of the season when
Teresa Schmidt registered the golden goal with 2:37 remaining in the extra session to knock off Central Michigan 3-2 in a Mid-American Conference game in Trager Stadium.
The Knights had a seemingly comfortable 2-0 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Chippewas' Zoey Emrick found the back of the cage twice in the span of about a minute to knot the score and send the game into the seven-on-seven sudden victory period.
Schmidt, who provided the assists on BU's first two goals, got off a total of three shots in overtime. After her first two shots were saved by CMU goalie Maja Halasz, Schmidt came off the field for a breather, and the rest paid dividends when reinserted into the lineup. With under three minutes to play, the Knights took possession in the middle of the field and
Isabel Gladys delivered a crisp pass ahead to the middle of the circle where Schmidt streaked in from the right side, collected the pass and rifled a backhanded shot into the left portion of the goal for the victory.
The Knights improve to 5-6 on the season and pull even at 2-2 in league play. The five wins marks a new program high as a Division I team.
Bellarmine controlled play most of the opening 30 minutes, outshooting Central Michigan 7-2 in the first half. The Knights opened the game's scoring on a first quarter penalty corner.
Peyton Hobson inserted to
Anna Crump who shuffled a pass to Schmidt who gave it right back to Crump for a shot that she deposited in the left side of the goal.
Paige Hoyer made it 2-0 about midway through the second quarter when she corralled a cross from Schmidt and notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season from close range.
For the game, the Knights outshot the Chippewas 17-6, including a 4-0 advantage in overtime. However, CMU kept it close by recording 11 saves, two of which were crucial defensive saves—one by Klara Mikulaskova and the other by Pauline Klep from point blank range.
Bellarmine now steps out of conference play to host the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday at 3 p.m. in a game that will serve as faculty-staff appreciation day.
