LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Morehead State pulled away late in defeating the Bellarmine University men's basketball team 64-51 on Monday night in Freedom Hall.
Bellarmine (1-4) was within 55-51 with 1:54 left after a pair of free throws by junior guard
Dezmond McKinney, but Morehead State (3-3) closed out the game on a 9-0 run to make the final score appear much more one-sided than was actually the case.
Senior guard
Bash Wieland sank a jumper to give Bellarmine a 44-43 advantage with 7:05 left, but Morehead State's Kalil Thomas followed with consecutive 3-pointers and the Eagles led the rest of the way. Thomas hit another triple with just under a minute remaining to make it a three-possession game and finished with a game-high 20 points.
Bellarmine never got in a rhythm offensively. The Knights shot 34.6 percent overall from the field and 23.8 percent from the 3-point line. Morehead State shot 42.4 percent overall, but the Eagles hit at a 50-percent clip in the second half and finished with a 42-29 rebounding advantage that led to a 15-4 superiority in second-chance points.
Senior guard
Garrett Tipton led Bellarmine with 12 points and Wieland added 10 and five rebounds. Senior guard
Alec Pfriem registered four assists.
Bellarmine will host Midway at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.
