SAN JOSE, Calif. — Junior guard
Hayley Harrison registered a career-high 23 points, but the Bellarmine University women's basketball team fell 81-65 at San Jose State in its season opener.
Harrison sank a trio of 3-pointers and also collected six rebounds and two steals for Bellarmine (0-1). Senior guard
Claire Knies notched 12 points while hitting all six of her free-throw attempts, and junior guard
Hope Sivori added 10 points in her Knights debut.
San Jose State (1-1) took control after outscoring Bellarmine 19-8 in the second quarter to lead 36-24 at halftime. The Knights went without a field goal over the final 6:44 of the period, with their only points being four free throws as the Spartans built a double-digit lead.
San Jose State increased the advantage to 18 points in the third quarter and as many as 19 in the fourth. The Knights never cut the deficit under 13 in the final period.
Bellarmine will remain in California and play at 5 p.m. (ET) Sunday at No. 4 UCLA.
