SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Junior forward
Langdon Hatton scored in double figures for the fifth straight game and the Bellarmine men's basketball team hung with Utah early, but the Utes' size proved to be too much to overcome as the Knights fell 85-43.
Bellarmine (4-9) trailed by just 11 at the half, 37-26, but Utah (9-2), the tallest team in the country, used its size and depth to run away in the second half, outscoring Bellarmine 48-17. Utah outrebounded Bellarmine, 42-33, and won the scoring battle in the paint, 38-24.
Sophomore guard
Billy Smith led Bellarmine with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting (54.5%), including 2-of-4 from three. He scored 12 of his points in the first half to help BU keep within striking distance at the break. Hatton finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, just one rebound shy of his fourth straight double-double. As a team, the Knights shot 32.7% from the field.
Lawson Lovering led Utah with 17 points of 8-of-10 shooting, all two-point attempts. Gabe Madsen added 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, all three-point attempts. In all, eleven Utes entered the scoring column as they shot 35-for-70 (50%) for the game.
Bellarmine will remain in the Salt Lake City area and head 47 miles south down I-15 to Provo on Friday, Dec. 22, to meet No 17 BYU (10-1). Like tonight's contest with Utah, it will be the Knights' first meeting with the Cougars. BYU will be the sixth and final Power-5 team that BU will face this season.
