Knights to close regular season with games at Jacksonville, UNF

2/21/2023 1:05:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine men's basketball team will be looking to secure its spot in the ASUN Championship Tournament as the Knights close their 2022-23 regular season this week with games at Jacksonville and North Florida on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

The matchup with Jacksonville at 5 p.m. on Wednesday will air on ESPNU with the regular season finale at 7 p.m. at North Florida being carried, as usual, on ESPN+.

The Wednesday contest will be a rematch of the 2022 ASUN Championship game, which the Knights won 77-72 in Freedom Hall last March 8.  This year, however, both teams still need to secure their spots in the tourney with only the top 10 teams making the field this season.

Bellarmine (13-16, 8-8 ASUN) is sitting alone in seventh place in the conference standings and can guarantee itself a spot with a win in either game this week.  Jacksonville (13-14, 6-10 ASUN), on the other hand, is tied for 10th in the league heading into this week's play.  North Florida (12-16, 7-9 ASUN) is tied for eighth in the standings heading into the final week.

The Knights are fresh off an emotional 68-67 "Senior Day" victory over Central Arkansas on Sunday as Curt Hopf's putback bucket with four seconds remaining provided the final margin. Freshman Peter Suder paced the Knights' offense with 17 in the game, and he has led BU in scoring in each of the last two games to raise his average to 9.8 on the year.

Garrett Tipton continues to lead the Knights' offense, putting up 12.7 points per game.  Juston Betz, meanwhile, leads Bellarmine in rebounding and assists, averaging 5.5 and 3.4, respectively.

Jacksonville is led by Kevion Nolan's 13.3 scoring average, and he adds 4.3 assists per game, which ranks third in the league. Mike Marsh contributes 10.7 per game to the Dolphin offense while Osayi Osifo is the leading rebounder at 5.7 per game.

North Florida features three double-digit scorers, led by Carter Hendricksen's 16.3 average.  The 6-7 native of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky also pulls down a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game.  Other top scorers for the Ospreys are Jose Placer at 14.5 per game and Jarius Hicklen with an 11.8 average.  Hicklen also leads the team in assists at 2.9 per game.
