LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In the second of a three-game homestand to open its 2023 campaign, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team will welcome IUPUI for an 8 p.m. (ET) contest Thursday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The match has been pushed back one hour from its original start time to help alleviate projected excessive heat.
IUPUI (2-0) marks the second straight opponent from the Horizon League for Bellarmine (0-0-1), which opened the season Sunday with a 3-3 draw against Northern Kentucky. The Jaguars are off to a strong start, claiming 2-0 home wins over Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois.
IUPUI scored relatively early in both games, finding the net in the 17th minute against Southern Indiana and in the 20th against Southern Illinois. The Jaguars added insurance goals inside the first 10 minutes of the second half against the Screaming Eagles and three seconds before halftime against the Salukis.
Four different players accounted for IUPUI's four goals. Shannon Ott and Sam Slimak were responsible for the game-winning goals. Ashton Kudlo posted one shutout in goal and combined with Cailynn Junk on the other clean sheet.
Bellarmine's season opener against Northern Kentucky was a rollercoaster. After enduring scoring difficulties in 2022, the Knights tied their Division-I era program record for goals with three, but BU allowed less than one goal per game last season, so conceding three was uncharacteristic. The Knights rallied from a 1-0 deficit with three straight goals, but the Norse managed to erase the deficit by scoring twice inside the last 17 minutes.
Junior midfielder
Emma Nicholson scored her first goal in a Knights uniform after transferring from Kentucky, and freshman midfielder
Rachel Skyberg found the net in her collegiate debut. Senior forward
Brielle Heuglin has returned for a fifth season and got it going with a goal.
Redshirt freshman defender
Dakota Bramer and junior forward
Ashlyn Fuller, who suffered a season-ending injury in last year's opener, both notched their first career points after collecting an assist each.
Bellarmine split halves in goal between junior
Cambria Kingman and redshirt freshman
Shelby Smith. They were active, with Kingman collecting two saves and Smith corralling eight. Sophomore defender
Sidney Rigsby had a highlight-reel defensive save in the first half.
Bellarmine and IUPUI met for the first time in the D1 era last season in Indianapolis and played to a scoreless stalemate.
