Women's soccer to host ASUN preseason favorite Lipscomb

9/16/2023 6:02:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team will host ASUN favorite Lipscomb at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Lipscomb (5-4, 1-0 ASUN) was predicted to win the league in the 2023 ASUN preseason coaches' poll after receiving 10 of 12 first-place votes. The Bisons boast plenty of star power, as Kelli Beiler was recognized as the conference's Preseason Player of the Year, Shelby Craft as the Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Logan McFadden as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

The United Soccer Coaches named all three to their watch list at the trio's respective positions. Beiler, the reigning ASUN Player of the Year, tops the ASUN with seven goals, including the game-winner off a penalty kick in a 1-0 home victory over Eastern Kentucky in the team's conference debut. Craft is tied for second in the league with three assists.

Bellarmine (3-3-2, 0-1) is in the midst of a particularly arduous portion of its schedule. The Knights have a stretch of five road games in six matches, with Lipscomb — the team to beat in the conference — the lone home contest in that span. The Bisons snap a string of three straight road opponents, but BU follows with matchups at Kennesaw State and Queens.

Bellarmine is seeking its first win against Lipscomb. The Bisons hold a 3-0-1 series lead, including a 3-0 win last season in which Beiler scored a pair of goals.

Bellarmine opened ASUN play with a 2-1 loss at Austin Peay. The Knights cut a 2-0 deficit in half on a goal by freshman midfielder Rachel Skyberg in the 75th minute but couldn't conjure up the equalizer.

After having only one player score multiple goals last season (Alexa Orozco, three), Bellarmine already has three this year. Senior forward Brielle Heuglin and freshman forward Lauren Bingham have three apiece while Skyberg has two.
