LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Towson Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
The visitors from Maryland broke open a scoreless game 25 minutes into the action when Sarah Hatfield collected the rebound off her own shot and got it past Bellarmine's
Kailey Workman, who had made the save originally.
The Tigers extended the lead to 2-0, again on a second effort, five minutes into the second half. After Workman denied a shot by TU's Madisyn Howard, Gianna Antone poked the ball back toward the cage and Annie Keele tipped it in.
The Knights finally broke into the scoring column with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game as
Anna Crump dribbled into the circle along the endine before shuffling to
Peyton Hobson for the score.
From there, the Tigers tightened up the defense and didn't surrender another shot as Towson hung on for the 2-1 victory.
Bellarmine Coach
Devanny Boisvert said that despite the result, she felt good about her team's execution. "Today was a tough loss because we felt like we executed the tactics we've been working on in practice, but the score was just not in our favor," she said. "It was one of the most complete games we've been able to play this season, and I was really happy with our passing sequences and support off the ball. We had opportunities, and could have limited the second chance opportunities—all things we can work on as we gear up for next weekend."
For the game, Towson owned advantages in shots (14-7) and corners (6-4), but Bellarmine kept it close by coming up with eight saves on the day—seven by Workman and a defensive save by
Alexa Rastigue, her first of the season and 10
th of her career.
The Knights fall to 1-3 on the season while Towson improves to 3-1.
The Knights are back in action on Friday when they'll return to Trager Stadium to host Virginia Commonwealth in a 2 p.m. contest.
