OXFORD, Ohio — The Bellarmine field hockey team saw its modest two-game win streak snapped as the host Miami RedHawks knocked off the Knights 4-1 in a Mid-American Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
Playing its third straight road game, Bellarmine had won its first two away from Louisville, but the RedHawks controlled the action from the outset in today's action and pulled away in the second half for the victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, Miami finally broke through for a goal 4:21 into the second period on a shot off the stick of Katherine Groff.
Despite not getting too many offensive opportunities, the Knights were able to knot the score at one apiece with 1:47 remaining in the first half. Bellarmine converted its first penalty corner of the game when
Peyton Hobson inserted to
Bente Moormann on the left wing, and she re-positioned herself just inside the circle and blasted a shot just inside the left post.
The teams went into the intermission tied at one, but the RedHawks came out firing in the second half. Bellarmine goalie
Kailey Workman and the BU defense were able to fend off most of the challenges as Miami outshot the Knights 7-0 in the third quarter. One of those attacks did find its mark, however, and the RedHawks pulled into a 2-1 lead on a Carlie Servis goal 4:20 into the period.
Miami kept applying the pressure and added two more goals early in the fourth quarter. Bellarmine finally broke through for some offensive opportunities late in the game, but a pair of shots came up empty as the game ended 4-1.
Final statistics indicate how decisive the action was in Miami's favor as the home team owned advantages of 22-4 in shots and 11-3 in penalty corners. Workman finished with nine saves for the Knights.
Bellarmine (4-6, 1-2 MAC) returns to action on Friday when the Knights host Central Michigan in a MAC game at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
