JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team had enough and simply would not be denied.
After going down to the wire — or at a minimum being competitive — in every previous ASUN game without anything to show for it in the win column, Bellarmine roared back and eventually overtook North Florida in the fourth quarter to pull out a 69-63 victory over the Ospreys at UNF Arena.
Bellarmine (6-12, 1-5 ASUN) outscored North Florida 35-22 in the second half. Junior guard
Hayley Harrison buried a pair of critical 3-pointers in the last period and finished with a game-high 21 points with nine rebounds against the Ospreys (7-12, 1-4).
Bellarmine trailed by as many as 15 in the first half as North Florida drained eight 3-pointers before the break, but the Knights recovered behind ball-hawking defense, relentless rebounding and taking care of the basketball.
Bellarmine forced 23 turnovers, its second most this season against a Division-I opponent, and committed only eight, its lowest tally against a D1 counterpart. As a result, the Knights posted a staggering 24-4 superiority in points off turnovers. Sophomore guard
Miyah Brown accounted for a career-high five of BU's 10 steals.
Rebounding was just as key. Bellarmine had a 39-30 advantage on the glass, including an astonishing 17-2 differential in offensive boards, seven of which were hauled in by the tenacious Brown. The Knights amassed 13 second-chance points to only two from North Florida.
By racking up takeaways, creating extra opportunities for itself and limiting UNF's extra chances, Bellarmine was able to eclipse the Ospreys down the stretch. The Knights trailed 25-15 after one quarter, but sophomore guard
Jayla Butler sparked the team off the bench with defense as BU cut its deficit to 41-34 at halftime.
North Florida bumped its lead back to double digits at 53-43 with three minutes left in the third and was still up nine with 5:58 remaining in the fourth. However, Bellarmine summoned another rally, this time a devastating 13-0 run in a little over three minutes.
Harrison had several 3-point attempts rattle out, but she nailed one from deep while getting fouled and completed the four-point play. An offensive rebound by Brown led to two free throws, and Sivori followed by sinking a pair from the charity stripe as Bellarmine took its first lead of the game at 62-61.
With less than three minutes left, Sivori pitched to Harrison, who drained another 3-pointer. Sivori would later help Bellarmine clinch the win by drawing a charge with 25 seconds left and the Knights leading 65-63. She followed by sinking a pair of free throws, and Harrison had the cherry on top with a breakaway layup after another defensive stand.
Like Harrison, Sivori was only one rebound shy of a double-double after finishing with 12 points and nine boards. Brown and senior guard
Claire Knies notched 11 points apiece as four Knights scored in double figures and the team went 18-for-19 (94.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
Bellarmine will play at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Jacksonville.
