LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine field hockey team cut a late deficit against Ohio to one, but ultimately fell Friday night at Trager Stadium 3-1.
Sammie Callaghan found the back of the cage for the Knights' score in the fourth quarter. The freshman snuck it in from the left side of the goal, just getting the ball between Ohio's diving keeper and the inside of the left post. Her second goal of the year narrowed the Bobcats' lead to one at 2-1.
Ohio (5-7, 2-3 MAC), however, had almost an immediate answer as Bodhi Littlefield scored 42 seconds later to extend their lead back to two at 3-1 with just 6:23 remaining.
Bellarmine (3-8, 1-3 MAC) held the advantage in penalty corners, five to three, including four to none in the second half. The Knights, though, were unable to convert any corners to scores. They had one opportunity shortly after Littlefield's goal, but it was diffused by Ohio.
Also scoring for the Bobcats were a pair of juniors, Emily Risser in the first quarter and Sasha Dikotla in the second.
Kailey Workman made seven saves on the evening for the Knights as Ohio outshot Bellarmine 16 to 6 (10 to 2 on goal).
Bellarmine will not have to wait long to try to earn their second conference win. Longwood visits on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET. It will be the Knights' annual Faculty & Staff Appreciation Game at Trager Stadium.
