Crump scores late goal, but Knights fall to Longwood 2-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Anna Crump netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season late in Bellarmine field hockey's Sunday afternoon contest, but the Knights fell to Longwood 2-1.

For Crump, a fifth-year senior, the four goals match her output from her junior campaign in 2022 for her second-highest single-season total. She found the back of the cage six times as a sophomore in 2021.

Bellarmine (3-9, 1-4 MAC) kept the game close despite a large discrepancy in penalty corner opportunities. The Knights' goal came off one of their three penalty corners. Longwood (4-7, 2-3 MAC) was afforded nine total penalty corners, but Bellarmine's defense allowed them to convert just one into a goal.

Luna Prieri and Madison Wiley accounted for Longwood's goals. Prieri started the scoring in the second quarter with her unassisted score. Wiley's goal came four minutes into the fourth quarter off a penalty corner and featured a pair of assists by Ireland McDermott and Hunter-Paige Johnson to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead before Crump's goal cut the deficit to one.

Bellarmine kept the pressure on Longwood's defense late, dominating possession in the waning minutes of the game, but were unable to get off a clean shot and register the equalizer.

Longwood outshot Bellarmine 9 to 5, 4 to 2 on goal, for the game.

Bellarmine now embarks on a four-game road trip, starting with a matchup at MAC-leading James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. JMU is the lone undefeated in conference play at 4-0. The Knights sit one game back of the sixth and final seed in the MAC Championship with three conference games left to play.
