LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Quarterback
Kyle Horvath had a record-setting afternoon Saturday at Page Stadium, but Bellarmine fell to Saint Mart-of-the-Woods in a shootout, 54-26.
Horvath finished with 419 yards and four touchdowns, both new program records. The freshman, however, also threw three interceptions after entering the game with just two on the season.
SMWC (4-0) powered their way to 548 total yards of offense, 307 on the ground and 241 through the air.
Bellarmine (3-2) accumulated 446 total yards of offense, but was plagued by five total turnovers.
Though it ended in a shootout, the game began innocuously enough with a scoreless first quarter.
The action began in earnest with just under 90 seconds to play in the opening frame. Horvath found
Shannon Tonge on a short post before Tonge took it down to the four yard line of SMWC for a 93-yard gain. The play was good for the longest play from scrimmage in Bellarmine history. That set up a three-yard touchdown to
Tyler Smith for the game's first score early in the second quarter.
From that point, however, the Pomeroys scored 30 straight points to seize control of the game early in the third quarter.
The Knights were unable to dent the scoreboard again until Horvath found
Nathan Kitchens for a four-yard score with 9:44 left in the third.
Horvath would add a pair of passing scores to Smith for 39 yards and Kitchens again for 20 yards, but the high-powered SMWC offense continued to move the ball. Smith finished with 111 yards and Kitchens with 53, but Tonge led the Knights with 114 yards on just two grabs.
Pomeroys quarterback Jeremiah Tosky finished the game 13-for-27 for 241 yards, three passing touchdowns and an interception. The junior from El Paso, Texas, also ran for 39 yards and a score on 10 carries.
SMWC also continued to move the ball well on the ground as they had through their first three games. Running back Derron Hazzard led all rushers with 120 yards on 17 attempts and scored twice. Right behind him was Keandre Johnes with 110 yards on eight attempts and one score.
With the loss, Bellarmine was unable to tie SMWC for second place in the MSFL and grab hold of a tiebreaker over them for hosting the semifinal playoff round.
The Knights have next week off before returning to Page Stadium for their Senior Day game against Oakland City on Saturday, October 26. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET and ESPN+ will carry the live stream.
