EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Bellarmine University men's cross country team was in championship form Friday at the Angel Mounds Invitational in its final regular-season meet.
Bellarmine (42 points) repeated as champion of the event with a resounding 27-point differential between the Knights and their nearest competitor in the 16-team field.
On top of that,
Chase Atkins crossed the finish line first to become the meet's individual champion. His 24:07.6 is the fourth-fastest 8k time in program history after he posted the third-best mark in the team's previous meet, the Live in Lou Classic.
Junior
Alex Hooten placed seventh in 24:35.4, which ranks 15th all-time. He climbed from 10th to sixth on the performance list.
Senior
D.K. Schnieders finished 12th and his 24:50.1 ranks 29th all-time. Senior
Nolan Hester followed in 13th with a 24:53.1 that ranks 35th all-time.
Rounding out the scoring, sophomore
Will Nobbe placed 18th in 25:00 and rose from 17th to 14th on the performance list. In addition, senior
Josh Meiman vaulted from 24th to 16th on the performance list after clocking a 25:02.5.
Junior
Sierra Oesterling led Bellarmine's women by placing 10th in 22:01.4, which is the 29th-fastest 6k time in program history. She took a step up from ninth to eighth on the performance list.
Senior
Trisha Sexton was next in 23rd (22:44.3), senior
Hannah Ellis was 34th (22:58.5), senior
Justice Pohlman-Singleton was 67th (24:03.6) and junior
Sarah Jacob rounded out the top five in 75th (24:21.9).
Bellarmine's women placed ninth of 16.
Bellarmine will compete Nov. 1 in the ASUN Championship at Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida.
"As I told the men, we have not finished the mission, we are just getting started," Bellarmine director of cross country and track & field
Jim Vargo said. "The coaching staff was pleased with the strong team showing of the women and men. We are excited to carry this momentum into the ASUN Championship in two weeks in Jacksonville."
