Moormann scores twice in fourth quarter, but Knights fall at Kent State 3-2

KENT, Ohio – Midfielder Bente Moormann and the Bellarmine field hockey team battled until the end Friday afternoon in a Mid-American Conference matchup at Kent State, but ultimately fell 3-2.

Moormann scored twice in the game's final 13 minutes, good for her first career multi-goal game. The senior's first goal came on one of the Knights' seven penalty corners. After her initial shot was blocked by a defender, she spun around swatted the ball in from the other side off the rebound to cut Bellarmine's deficit in half at 2-1.

Moormann's second score came on a fast break from the right shoulder and deflected off KSU's keeper with just over two minutes left. Luna Tuncay was credited with her fourth assist of the season, tying her for the team lead with Anna Crump.

Sandwiched between Moormann's goals, however, was a dagger goal by the Golden Flashes' Eva Usoz, just barely a minute after Moormann got the Knights on the board. That score gave the Golden Flashes a two-goal lead with just over two minutes left. Although Moormann cut the deficit in half once again, KSU's three goals would be enough.

Also scoring for KSU was Lauren Conroy, who netted two goals as well, the first two of her career. All three of the Golden Flashes' scores came off penalty corners, of which they had nine.

Bellarmine (3-12, 1-6 MAC) and Kent State (6-10, 5-2 MAC) matched each other with both 10 shots and six shots on goal apiece.

KSU's Lieve Jansen recorded four saves while Bellarmine's Kailey Workman stopped three.

Of note for the Knights, Crump, a fifth-year senior, passed Mary Ringwald (2014-17) as the program's all-time games played leader with 78. Last Friday against James Madison, Crump passed Ringwald for Bellarmine's all-time lead in games started with 76.

With the loss, the Knights were eliminated from a spot in the MAC Championship.

Bellarmine returns to the pitch at Saint Francis Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
