Southern Indiana beats men’s basketball on buzzer beater

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Jack Campion jumper with 1.4 seconds left lifted Southern Indiana to a 71-69 win over the Bellarmine men's basketball team Wednesday night at Knights Hall.

In a game between old GLVC rivals each looking for their first win, Bellarmine fell to 0-3 while Southern Indiana now sits at 1-3. The contest was Bellarmine's first in the I-64 Showcase.

The loss was a tough pill to swallow for Bellarmine as they controlled the game for the bulk of the second half.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw six lead changes, the Knights built their lead up to 10 at 45-35 with 14:30 left in the second when Myles Watkins hit Jack Karasinski with a lob for a layup on an inbounds play from the baseline. The play was part of a 14-0 run that eventually put the Knights up 15 at 50-35.

Bellarmine's lead would balloon to as high as 19 on a layup by Billy Smith with 10:09 left.

USI, however, would battle back with a 14-0 run that included by a four-point play by Damoni Harrison. The Screaming Eagles would close the gap to four at 58-54 with a three by Jayland Randall with 5:59 left and again after a pair of free throws by Harrison with 5:20 left.

After a three by Tyler Doyle to put Bellarmine up seven, USI came right back with six straight points, including an exclamation point dunk by Stephen Olowoniyi, to cut the Knights' lead to one at 63-62.

USI would finally tie the game at 69-69 on a corner three by Randall with 50.8 seconds left.

A missed three by the Knights on their penultimate possession gave the Screaming Eagles the opportunity to call a timeout to set up a play. They put the ball in the hands of Campion, who dribbled out much of the clock before making his move to the top of the key for the game-winning jumper to cap a 7-0 run to end the game.

A prayer three-pointer by Dezmond McKinney from three-quarters of the court away came up short to seal the game for USI.

Karasinski again led the Knights with 18 points while Ben Johnson added 12 and Smith added 10. Dylan Branson tallied seven points and three assists.

As a team, Bellarmine outshot Southern Indiana 46.3 percent to 45.3 percent, but USI was able to get to the free throw line eight more times than BU, outscoring them 17-11.

Campion finished with just seven points while playing the hero for USI. Randall poured in a game-high 21 and added three rebounds and three steals. Olowoniyi finished with 14.

Bellarmine heads east to Marshall on Saturday for the final game of the I-64 Showcase. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
