SPARTANBURG, SC — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team once again proved capable of summoning an extra gear when needing it the most.
On Friday afternoon in its first outing in the Spartan Shootout Thanksgiving MTE, Bellarmine rallied back from a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit for the second time in three games to achieve victory, on this occasion defeating Jackson State 67-59 at host USC Upstate's G.B. Hodge Center.
Senior guard
Hayley Harrison registered 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals for Bellarmine (6-2), which outscored Jackson State 20-6 in the final period. Junior guard
Miyah Brown sank 9-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe in notching 15 points, junior guard
Erin Toller chipped in 12 and senior forward
Skylar Treadwell supplied 11 points and eight rebounds as the Knights won their third straight game.
Two of those triumphs have required significant fourth-quarter comebacks. On Nov. 21 against Wright State, Bellarmine trailed by 11 in the last period before surging to a 79-71 victory after outscoring the Raiders 28-11 over the final 10 minutes. In their neutral-site contest against Jackson State (1-5), the Knights were staring down a 57-47 deficit with less than eight minutes remaining.
But Bellarmine didn't blink.
Senior guard
Hope Sivori followed a Harrison basket with a 3-pointer as the Knights cut their hole to four with 3:20 left. Harrison then followed a putback by Treadwell with a lay-in to tie it at 59-all with 1:22 remaining.
A steal by Brown led to a go-ahead free throw by Harrison. Brown then capitalized on another JSU turnover by sinking a pair from the charity stripe.
After another defensive stand, Brown made it a two-possession game with 28 seconds left on a free throw, and senior guard
Ashlee Harris sewed it up with a steal and two more makes from the FT line.
Bellarmine closed the game on a 20-2 run over the final 6:01. The Knights' defense held Jackson State scoreless over the last 4:31.
Free throws were of prime importance. Bellarmine went 22-for-29 from the charity stripe while Jackson State was 0-for-3. The Knights also forced 25 turnovers, with several timely takeaways while they were on the comeback trail.
The contest was tied at 18 after one quarter, and Bellarmine took a 35-31 into halftime. Jackson State turned the tide in the third period, outscoring the Knights 22-12 to take a 53-47 advantage into the fourth.
Bellarmine will conclude the Spartan MTE by meeting host USC Upstate at 3 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
