Knights again buckle down in 4th, secure 72-64 win over host USC Upstate in MTE

SPARTANBURG, SC — The holiday season has arrived, and the Bellarmine University women's basketball team is cooking.

The Knights completed a sweep at the Spartan Shootout Thanksgiving MTE while winning their fourth straight game behind a 72-64 triumph Saturday over event host USC Upstate at the G.B. Hodge Center.

Senior guard Hayley Harrison amassed a game-high 21 points with seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals for Bellarmine (7-2), which defeated Jackson State 67-59 on Friday in its Spartan MTE opener. Senior guard Hope Sivori notched 16 points, junior guard Miyah Brown contributed 10 and senior forward Skylar Treadwell hauled in 11 rebounds against USC Upstate (2-7).

Bellarmine overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit in its win over Jackson State. It also came down to the final period against USC Upstate, but in a different fashion as the tight contest saw eight lead changes and six ties.

After there were three lead changes in the fourth quarter, Bellarmine took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Brown with 6:38 left. Junior guard Erin Toller followed a pair of baskets by Harrison with a couple free throws as the Knights' lead crept to 63-57.

After a pair of defensive stops, senior guard Ashlee Harris delivered the backbreaker, drilling a 3-pointer to boost the advantage to nine with approximately three minutes remaining. The Knights didn't allow USC Upstate to get closer than five thereafter.

Bellarmine struggled from the field — as did the Spartans — but half of the Knights' 22 made field goals came via the 3-point shot. It was BU's fifth time cracking double-digit makes from beyond the arc this season.

In addition to the stockpile of 3-pointers made, Bellarmine committed only 10 turnovers and was solid enough from the free throw line (17-for-25), especially in the fourth quarter, to break 70 points for the seventh time.

Bellarmine is off from action until a 2 p.m. (ET) Dec. 8 meeting at Morehead State.
