DeLAND, Fla. — The sun shined on the Bellarmine University women's basketball team once again in Florida.
Bellarmine notched its second Atlantic Sun Conference win of the season — and second in the Sunshine State — after rolling to a 64-52 victory over Stetson on Saturday afternoon in the J. Ollie Edmunds Center.
It was a huge victory for Bellarmine (7-14, 2-7 ASUN), as Stetson (11-12, 6-3) entered in third place in the conference standings. The Knights, who last week earned a road win over North Florida, ran away with the contest in the second half, leading by double digits for the last quarter-plus of action.
Effectively utilizing a 2-3 zone, Bellarmine limited Stetson to 33.3 percent shooting while forcing 17 turnovers. The Knights dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Hatters 46-34. BU was relentless crashing the offensive backboards, piling up 17 offensive rebounds and producing 15 second-chance points.
On two occasions this season,
Hayley Harrison finished one rebound shy of a double-double. The junior guard wouldn't be denied against Stetson, amassing 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior forward
Cam Browning "suffered" Harrison's previous fate, falling a single board short of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Junior guard
Hope Sivori caught fire from the perimeter and buried four of her six 3-points attempts while registering a game-high 15 points. Sophomore guard
Miyah Brown collected eight rebounds and four assists, and senior guard
Claire Knies hauled in seven rebounds.
Stetson led for nearly the entire first quarter, but Bellarmine started to take control in the second, as a Sivori 3-pointer just one minute into the second period staked the Knights to a lead they would never relinquish. BU led by as many as eight in the frame before taking a 31-26 advantage into halftime.
Sivori drilled a 3-pointer while getting fouled and completed a four-point play in the third to pump Bellarmine's lead up to 10 early in the quarter. Brown sank a jumper, Harrison drained a 3-pointer and senior guard
Ashlee Harris coolly knocked down a jumper just before time expired to cap a 7-0 run that put the Knights up 54-39 heading into the fourth.
Early in the last period, Brown made a nice interior feed to Browning for a layup and 18-point lead, Bellarmine's largest of the game. Stetson never got closer than 11, and that came with less than two minutes left.
Bellarmine will host Kennesaw State at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday in Freedom Hall.
