Two big innings lift FGCU over baseball in ASUN opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. — FGCU had two five-run innings in defeating the Bellarmine University baseball team 10-4 Friday in an Atlantic Sun Conference opener at Swanson Stadium.

FGCU (7-10, 1-0 ASUN) plated five runs in the first and followed with five more in the fifth, but Bellarmine (1-16, 0-1) had several strong relief outings surrounding those two bad innings on a day in which BU utilized six pitchers.

Bellarmine homered twice. Junior first baseman Casey Sorg smashed a solo homer in the fourth for his second long ball of the season. Junior pinch hitter Jacob Rowold unloaded on the first pitch he saw in the seventh, belting a two-run shot for his third homer of the year.

Bellarmine scored its final run in the ninth. Sophomore catcher Charlie Rife doubled in the gap and scored on sophomore left fielder Joey Milto's RBI single.

Sorg and senior center fielder Will Aubel collected two hits apiece. Senior left-hander Steven Thom and senior right-hander Ross Goldschlag tossed 2.0 shutout innings each in relief. Freshman right-hander Sam Matherly and sophomore right-hander Holden Groher posted 1.0 scoreless inning apiece.

The second game of the series is set for 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
